What is a backlink?
A backlink is a clickable link that points back to a targeted website. The keyword in that sentence is clickable. There are two types of backlinks, Nofollow and Dofollow.
Nofollow: A Nofollow backlink is a clickable link from a site that points back to your site, but does not pass link juice to your site for the purpose of pagerank.
Dofollow: A Dofollow backlink is a clickable link from a site that points back to your site, and does pass link juice to your site to help gain pagerank.
Why do I need backlinks?
Their are two main reasons you need backlinks. 1. Website traffic: The more clickable links you have out in cyberspace the more chances you have for people to click them and be brought to your site. 2. Popularity: When Google and other search engines are ranking your site and your competitions site one of the factors that counts the most is votes IE backlinks. You must look at backlinks as votes, the more votes you have the more popular your site is. If Site A and B are trying to rank for the keyword How To Create Backlinks and site A has 1,000 backlinks and site B has 5 backlinks, chances are site A will rank higher in the serps (Search Engine Results Page) than site B.
Note: Their are many factors that go into ranking a site, and while only Google and the other search engines know the true answers, backlinking is one of the most discussed methods.
